Fun and games for seniors

Life Can Be All Fun and Games for Seniors!

The benefits of playing games as we age

Playing games benefits us throughout our lives, helping to keep our brains sharp and improve our overall health. According to The National Institutes of Health, board games and other types of games can also be effective in combating dementia and slow the onset of Alzheimer’s disease—diseases which affect at least 24 million people worldwide.

A 2006 study found that brain function improved when seniors regularly engaged in activities related to memory, reasoning and mental speed. Simple and stimulating mental exercise and playing games once a week for a 20-year period reduced the risk of dementia by seven percent.

The benefits of play can also make a noticeable difference in a short period of time. In addition to improving brain function, games also help to combat social isolation, which can become common in older adults. Games give people new ways to interact and enable us to connect, share stories and develop meaningful relationships.
