Resident Panel Highlights Community

During a recent panel discussion, Wesley residents shared their experience about moving into and living in their respective Wesley communities.

Residents from each Wesley community shared their experience and advice about moving into their campuses during a recent online video discussion. While the stunning mountain and calming water views were contributing factors, the deciding factors seemed to surprise even the residents.

Continuing Care

“Continuing care was important to me. I saw what it was like for my children to find my in-laws a place when it was too late. I didn’t want them to go through finding me a place as I aged,” recalled Joanne who lives at Bradley Park.

As your care needs change, Wesley is able to meet your needs where you are, from independent village homes, cottages or apartments, to the signature Catered Living program, similar to traditional assisted living. Should it be needed, select campuses offer a secure memory care support assisted living wing with 24-hour licensed nursing care.

When her husband was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s, Des Moines Resident Diane said she knew that continuous care would be necessary. Still, the support from the neighbors of the Des Moines campus was unexpected, “At Wesley, you’re surrounded by people experiencing the same life stages in your age range. Everyone’s journey is different, but we have an unbelievable support system here. It’s uplifting to have similar people to assist you during these changing times.”

Sense of Community

A recurring theme of the panel was the importance of relationships, especially during these uncertain times. Bradley Park resident Rick commented on his experience, “The neighbors created a buddy experience to check in daily with one another. When socializing is limited, it’s good to have someone to look after. You become fast friends.”

Organized Classes

While each Wesley campus is taking precautions and safety protocols, residents are able to continue their camaraderie while social distancing. From watching a movie, grabbing a coffee, learning a new skill, and organized exercise classes outside, the residents of Wesley continue to be on-the-go, safely.

“It’s good to have something to look forward to and see my friends each morning. I feel like I have everything I need here on campus and don’t need to drive anywhere,” said Rick.

Maintenance-Free Living

“All my stress of moving went away when I realized there was no home maintenance. I love not having to look after the building or take care of the yard. The staff will even come in and change the lightbulbs! I love that everything is just a phone call away,” explained Lea Hill resident Barbara.

Checklist

During the panel, the residents gave their top recommendations for moving to Wesley:

  • Choose to move when you’re young enough to make the decision yourself and can still develop relationships. Don’t wait until it is too late.
  • If you think you’re interested, get on the waitlist. There is a fee, but it applies to your monthly fee when you move in, so there is no risk.
  • Downsize more than you think you’ll need to and start earlier than you feel you need to.
  • Joining a class is a great way to get your toes wet and try something new. It’s how you get to know people.
  • Stop thinking of this as a problem and start thinking of it as an adventure. Take it with a smile, and it will make a big difference.
